Double-click fault guide
A double-click fault is when pressing the button once delivers two or more clicks — single-clicking a file opens it, or a drag lets go mid-way. It is one of the most common signs of an ageing microswitch.
Common causes
Worn switch: after millions of presses the metal spring loses tension, so the contacts wobble and produce bounce. Static buildup: in dry environments internal static disturbs the switch signal. Oxidation and dust: dirty or oxidized contacts make contact resistance unstable. Driver or OS settings: in rare cases an over-sensitive system double-click speed misreads as a fault.
How to judge it
The tool records a timestamp for every click. If two presses land within the threshold (50 ms by default) it is flagged as a double-click; a deliberate human double-click is normally 100 ms or more.
How to fix it
Spray electronics contact cleaner into the switch gap and rapid-fire it several dozen times. Lowering the system “double-click speed” eases it temporarily. Replacing the switch calls for soldering — popular picks include the Japanese Omron D2F or Kailh GM 8.0. Some drivers also let you raise the software debounce time.
FAQ
Why does one click fire twice?
Usually the metal spring inside the microswitch has aged, losing tension so the contacts wobble and produce signal bounce. Try contact cleaner on the oxidation first; the long-term fix is replacing the switch or the mouse.
What interval counts as a double-click fault?
A deliberate human double-click is normally 100 ms or more. The tool flags a double-fire when two presses land closer than the 50 ms threshold by default — you can adjust it.
Will the test misread my rapid clicking?
It can. If you deliberately click very fast (game speed), presses closer than the threshold are recorded as double-fires. To diagnose hardware, click at a normal pace rather than spamming.
How do I verify a switch replacement?
Re-run the double-click test after the swap and click a few dozen times to watch for irregular intervals. If they clear, the fix worked — and screenshots help with a warranty claim.
